Classic Beef Meatballs & Tomato Sauce – Ballerina Farm
SIMPLE TOMATO SAUCE
INGREDIENTS
1 (28-oz) can crushed tomatoes
1 onion, finely diced
6 cloves garlic, smashed
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Small handful of fresh basil, torn
DIRECTIONS
Heat the olive oil in a medium pot over low heat. Add the diced onion and sauté gently until soft and translucent, about 5–7 minutes.
Add the garlic, oregano, and thyme. Cook for about 2 minutes, until fragrant.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes and simmer uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until slightly thickened.
Add the sugar and balsamic vinegar, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
Remove from heat and finish by stirring in the fresh basil. Set aside while you prepare the meatballs.
